BERLIN— A suspicious suitcase found at Windhoek airport that triggered an international alarm was only a test of local security and did not contain any explosives, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on Friday.
Namibian police found the suitcase in routine security checks during loading ahead of a German tourist flight to Munich, Namibian and German authorities said Thursday.
De Maiziere told a news conference in Germany Friday that Federal Crime Office (BKA) experts examined the suitcase and found it was a test suitcase designed to check security.
"BKA officials have examined it and the result is that it is a so-called 'real test suitcase' from a U.S. company," he said.
"This company produces alarm and detection systems and these test suitcases are made to test security measures," De Maiziere added.
"No explosives were found in the suitcase and at no time was there any danger to passengers."

Stories such as these bring into question recent events of airport security breaches--were they really breaches or staged theatrics. It was recently reported that former Homeland Security Chief, Michael Chertoff who is now employed by the same companies that build airport full body scanners has made a substantial earning by lobbying for these machines.
